MUTATIONAL DYNAMICS OF THE MITOCHONDRIAL GENOME
SLUG REGENERATION
Employing experimental biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and systems biology we study the rate of generation and accumulation of mutations in the mitochondrial genome and the mechanisms of regeneration in garden slugs.
OUR RESEARCH
Employing next generation sequencing and bioinformatics we study the load of genetic variants in the mitochondrial genome in mouse and humans and their relationship to human neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases.
With experimental, morphological, and genomic approaches we study stem cell biology and molecular and cellular mechanisms of regeneration in land gastropods.

I have a degree in Biology from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) and a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. I carried out postdoctoral work in developmental neurobiology at Guy´s Hospital of the University of London.
I also performed sabbatical research at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NIH) and in the Biology Department of Duke University. I am currently a tenured Senior Researcher (Investigador Titular “C”) at the Institute of Neurobiology (INB-UNAM).

I have a degree in Genomic Sciences and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the National University of Mexico (UNAM). I did a post-doc at the Helmholtz Zentrum in Münich where I worked in
zebrafish lateral line development and regeneration. I am currently an Associate Researcher (Investigador Asociado C) at the Institute of Neurobiology (INB-UNAM).

I hold a B.Sc. degree in Biology and an M.Sc. in Biochemistry. I carry out lab work to support the groups’s research with experimental biology and molecular biology procedures.
My teaching activities include B.Sc. courses on physicochemistry at ENES-Juriquilla and practical exercises for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students at the Institute of Neurobiology (INB-UNAM).

We are sequencing the genome of garden slugs and in this page you will soon be able to follow its progress.
OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR GROUP
We seek motivated undergrads and graduate students to carry out exciting and innovative research projects on regeneration with experimental and bioinformatic approaches. Full graduate scholarships can be obtained by qualifying students admitted to our programs.
Opportunities also exist for postdoctoral fellows applying for support of DGAPA-UNAM and CONACYT.
